On the same day the Opposition NDP launched their Healthcare Solutions Tour to find remedies for the healthcare crisis from health professionals and community leaders, the Government of Saskatchewan announced it will begin talking with stakeholders to increase the scope of responsibility for certain healthcare professionals.
Over the next several weeks, the Ministry of Health will begin the consultations with an aim to broaden the range of practices for pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and advanced care paramedics. The government suggests that some changes that could come out of these consultations include allowing paramedics to stitch minor cuts instead of taking patients to the emergency department and granting nurse practitioners the permission to admit and discharge patients.
In a news release, the provincial government says with these consultations and changes, they hope to achieve shorter wait times for primary care, additional means of accessing certain healthcare services, and increased contribution from all health professionals across the province.
