Over the summer, school and playground speed limit signs were switched out to reflect the new rules which go into effect today (September 1 ). School and playground zones speed limits are 30 kilometres per hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. This was the last summer that school zones wouldn’t be in effect. They now continue 12 months of the year.
Around high schools however, there will no longer be specially posted speed limits because that too changed. The 30 km/h speed limit will not apply around high schools. But it will apply to the newly created playground zones which impact roads near park spaces that have play equipment or programmed sports fields intended for children 14 and under. And, U-turns are not permitted in school zones around elementary or high schools.
