It’s my Parting Shot for some Weekend Short Shots…..
It seems only fitting that the best team in baseball throughout the 2026 season ends up being crowned World Series champions. The Milwaukee Brewers won 103 games in the regular campaign, then continued their consistently very good play in the post-season by winning 11 of 13 games.
There are baseball purists, older than me, who long for the days when the best team throughout the regular-season from each of the American and National Leagues would go directly to the World Series and dispense with the other three rounds of playoffs that we now have as 12 of the 32 teams qualify for post-season play. The pro, pre-1969 crowd got their wish this season!
No matter which Major League season format you prefer, don’t expect to see anything until at least July 1 of next year. The owners are steadfast in wanting a salary cap and the players are adamant against it. We’ll see which side blinks first!!
By the way, I remind you of my September 29th Parting Shot, prior to the playoffs starting, where I said – in the end, The Fearless Predictor is predicting the Brewers will bring a World Series title to Milwaukee for the first time since Hank Aaron and the Braves defeated the Yankees in 1957. This time, it’ll be the Brewers in five games over Tampa Bay! So there!!
With that, keep in mind that T-F-P, on October 29 – yesterday – said, B-C winning the Grey Cup Game on November 15 in Calgary by more than a field goal over the Alouettes! Again, that means I’m saying the Riders lose the West semi-final tomorrow in Vancouver – and I hope I’m wrong!
Okay, my take on the trade that my Winnipeg Jets made with New Jersey to rid themselves of Connor Hellebuyck and his drama. Notwithstanding the current seven-game winless streak, I think Kevin Cheveldayoff did very well in what he and the Jets got in return from the Devils. They got second line scoring help in the form of Dawson Mercer, they got a competent N-H-L goalie in Nico Daws and they got a top New Jersey prospect in 2026 first round draft pick in forward Alexander Command. Those were the kind of pieces that I felt Winnipeg had to get. I also felt they needed to get a first round draft pick in a future draft, preferably in 2027, but I’m fine with a 2029 second round and a 2027 seventh round selection. As for getting injured forward Nick Bjugstad, that’ll only be good if the 34-year-old chooses to return to play and can play as he was capable of a few seasons ago! Overall, two thumbs up from me, Chevy!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
