Saskatoon construction crews didn’t quite win the race against winter and are now waiting on a sunny day to complete numerous projects across the city.
At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Director of Construction and Design Matt Jurkiewicz explained that they won’t be starting any new projects, and if the forecast is accurate, projects that are underway will be completed this year.
One project of note is 25th street. He says the water and sewer work is done, and all that remains is a pave job, the success of which depends on air and ground temperatures.
“We were hoping to pave today in several locations, but the weather didn’t allow us to do that,” he explains.
He says if good weather doesn’t pull through, there is a contingency plan in place.
“If the weather doesn’t hold, we are pulling contingency plans in place to sacrificially pave locations, depending on the routes, or bring them up to a good stage that we can ride them through the winter, maintain them, and continue on in the spring. We’re trying to take every day that we can to finish up.”
As for College Drive, the City says work is still ongoing to complete the new traffic signals and pave the north lanes so the street can be open to traffic this winter.
