Starting September 8th, the Saskatchewan government will impose a 50 per cent reciprocal tax on alcohol from the United States.

Premier Scott Moe made the announcement Wednesday afternoon during a news conference in Prince Albert—along with members of  his cabinet.

The move is in response to U.S. tariffs implemented on August 22nd.  American booze will remain on shelves in Saskatchewan because it allows residents to make their own choice, according to Moe. He quotes statistics as saying sales of U.S alcohol are down by more than 40 per cent in Saskatchewan.

“I think that actually sends a much stronger message than any government-ordered ban that could be put in place.”

Moe draws a line when it comes to imposing export taxes on oil and potash going to the United States. He says it would be devastating to Saskatchewan’s economy and prefers a different approach.
