Canada’s Conservative leader is calling for an extension of the gas tax relief.
Pierre Poilievre was speaking Vancouver Sunday and suggests the cost of fuel is just one more thing make life unaffordable for Canadians.
“After Carney doubled the deficit and brought in his newly renamed carbon tax food prices are now rising faster than in any other G7 country. It’s no wonder 76 per cent of Canadians say their biggest household cost is groceries.”
The federal government temporarily cut its fuel tax on gas and diesel in April. The government plans to hike its fuel tax back up to 10 cents per litre of gas and four cents per litre of diesel on September 8.
Poilievre proposed a plan that he says will save Canadians 25 cents a litre, 20 bucks a fill up and about a thousand dollars between now and July 1st next year.
“That’s why Conservatives are calling on the Carney Liberals to cancel their September gas tax hike and eliminate all gas taxes from now until at least Canada Day.”
The CTF is also calling on federal government to leave the tax off on September 8th, and on the provincial government to consider lessening or removing the provincial gas tax, as well.
In a news release the Canadian Taxpayers Federation said according to Statistics Canada inflation increased to three per cent in July compared to last year.
“Higher gasoline prices were one of the largest factors contributing to the overall increase in inflation. Gas prices increased 25.7 per cent in July compared to last year.”
