The scourge of social media. A local and longtime Saskatoon business owner is closing down. There is a Facebook group which gives a platform for residents to boot or salute restaurants in Saskatchewan. And this particular restaurant was continuously criticized after an incident with an insect. But I understood they did address the situation however couldn’t escape the weight of an onslaught of skepticism and ongoing scathing reviews. Consequently, after being a Saskatoon staple for many years, the doors are closing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fastidious and I actually do access the Government of Saskatchewan Inspection InSite. You can type in the name of a restaurant, and it will tell you when recent inspections took place and might say something like Food facility is not free of pests or Equipment as specified by the Public Health Inspector, are not kept clean and sanitized and/or maintained in good repair. It will also indicate if it is a routine inspection or a follow up. I do believe restaurants must be held to standards as they are set under health guidelines. But what I see happening now are restaurant management monitoring these social media groups. If we expect these businesses to maintain the best standards, I don’t think it’s good use of their time if they’re subjugated to social media in hopes of doing damage control because the trolls are piling on.
