I had a little adventure on the weekend when I took my mom and two great nephews as well as my great niece to a couple of small towns in the south. Its an annual trek to put flowers on the graves of family members in Crane Valley and Mossbank. The last time the kids came with us we got horribly lost when I attempted a side trip to Old Wives Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary. That year I used google maps and unbeknownst to me my mom didn’t realize you – that being the little dot – had to follow the highlighted route. So that was fun. We eventually arrived and had lots of laughs after. This trip I gave the directions responsibility to my oldest great nephew and he aced it. We took all back roads from Crane Valley to Mossbank. The problem arose when got back to the highway and there were major construction zones between us and Mossbank. They actually have streetlights set up for traffic in either direction while you wait for the pilot truck to guide you through. I was so intent on making sure I stayed in the path being taken by the pilot truck that I got to the other end of the construction and realized we were pretty much at Gravelbourg. A few things, Department of Highways – when you undertake significant road projects don’t remove the town signs. Or if you do put them up somewhere else. When we left town – there was no sign. Secondly, terrific food and service at the local bar and grill and lastly – hats off to men and women working on the highways during this heatwave. It was 34 degrees Saturday and the humidex was 37. And one could only guess what it was like standing or working on that fresh asphalt. I highly recommend using some of your summertime to chart out your own little adventure to one of our small Saskatchewan towns.
