A public inquest into the death of Boden Umpherville will be held this week, starting today, at the Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Prince Albert Police Service conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle April 1, 2023. Forty-year-old Umpherville was an occupant in that vehicle which had been reported stolen earlier that day.

An altercation broke out as police attempted to restrain and arrest him. Once arrested, Umpherville was observed to be in medical distress and was transported to Prince Albert Victoria Hospital. He was pronounced deceased 25 days later.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
