Tops in the East met last in the West Tuesday night, resulting in a long, error-filled W-C-B-L game that the Saskatoon Berries won by a final score of 13-12 in 10 innings over the Brooks Bombers.
Courtesy runner Nathan Houston scored the winning run when Brooks shortstop Deri Steiert-Couture threw wide of first base on Josh Henson’s weakly-hit bouncing ball. That extended the Berries’ winning streak to eight games and improved their overall record to 18-6 while Brooks dropped to 4-18. The winning run was the fourth lead change of the game that took three hours and 48 minutes to play in front of 1,308 fans at Cairns Field – most of whom stayed to the end. What they saw was a game with eight errors, four by each team, and 377 pitches thrown – plus a bottom of the ninth inning rally by the home team in which catcher Gavin Panks delivered a game-tying two-run single with two out to force the 10th frame. Tanner Hosick struck out the side in the top of the 10th to record the pitching win – his record now 5-1 with two saves out of the bullpen for Saskatoon. The two teams will play each other again on Canada Day with first pitch at 1 o’clock, just over 14 hours after Tuesday’s contest ended. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game conversations with Berries’ head coach Joe Carnahan and Hosick…..
