No charges will be laid against an RCMP officer following a SIRT investigation into an in-custody death from 2024.
On December 13, 2024, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response was notified of the death of a man in RCMP custody.
That night at 12:20 a.m., Carlyle RCMP responded to a reported assault at a home on the White Bear First Nation, where they found two injured people. A 49-year-old man, from the same community, was arrested and taken to the Carlyle Detachment.
At around 9 a.m., officers noticed the man was in medical distress and attempted to administer first aid until EMS arrived. He was later pronounced dead.
SIRT has since reviewed the incident and determined that no use of force resulted in the man’s death. An autopsy revealed that the man’s death was the result of the combined toxicity of alcohol and multiple drugs with respiratory and central nervous system depressive effects, with the contributing factor of significant cardiovascular disease.
