It was a wild weekend for weather, especially across southern and southeastern Saskatchewan. Saturday brought supercell thunderstorms with golf-ball to tennis-ball sized hail, and Sunday delivered 10 thunderstorm warnings, 6 tornado warnings, and at least one tornado.
According to Gordon Guessner of the Saskatchewan Severe Weather Tracker Facebook page, the tornado touched down near Stoughton, west of Carlyle. High winds were reported to have damaged a Co-op card lock nearby.
James Colangelo is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. He says “Estevan-Carlyle was probably the worst area for storms. We did have quite a few reports of hail in that area, as well as that strong wind in Estevan.” The highest gust was recorded at 111 kilometres per hour on Saturday.
Storm chasers from across North America converged on Carlyle broadcasting live video on various YouTube channels.
Further west, Banff Sunshine Village will be offering June skiing for the third time in thirty years after a fresh dump of snow. The resort says 25 centimetres fell over the weekend, and another 18 centimetres were expected to touch the ground Monday and Tuesday.
