If you think there’s a lot of mosquitos out right now, just wait a few more weeks.
That’s from Dr. Simon Kapaj, Medical Health Officer with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
He says the weather we’ve seen so far this spring is the perfect recipe for a mosquito haven.
“As we’re getting hotter days, we’re also getting wet days. So, it’s a combination of high temperatures and rainy days, which are perfect conditions for an increase in mosquito population.”
He adds that there has been a notable increase in mosquito population in recent years.
In light of this, prevention is key. Dr. Kapaj’s tips include cutting your tall grass, dumping out any standing water in your yard, wearing light colours, and wearing bug spray if spending any time outdoors.
He says he shares these tips not only to prevent the public from getting those pesky bites, but also to prevent West Nile Virus cases, as well.
Last year, according to the Province, there were 5 positive West Nile cases, and no deaths.
Kapaj says the virus is only transmitted by a specific type of mosquito, the Culex mosquito, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
