The City of Saskatoon’s mosquito control program is underway with the city treating sites likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes which includes not just the City of Saskatoon but a surrounding buffer area.
Because mosquitos use standing water to reproduce the City treats standing water to target mosquitoes in the larval life stage. In a news release city officials note that an increase in rainfall in the last few years has created habitat in places that have not been active in a very long time consequently they expect to see increased activity with continued rainfall.
Residents are encouraged to remove standing water, ensure things like bird baths, pool covers, pet bowls and wading pools are regularly emptied and replaced with clean water.
Residents are also advised to clean eavestroughs regularly so water doesn’t collect and rid yards of debris that could collect water like old tires.
