The bond between a mother, a daughter, and the place they both grew up will be on display next month in Nipawin.
Vicki Champman Major says she and her mother decided to embark on creating an art show about three years ago. Thirteen paintings later, ‘Roots and Wings’ is going live in the Nipawin Art Gallery on June 1st.
Champman Major says Roots and Wings pays tribute to her hometown, while also appreciating where her life has taken her.
“This art show is not about me. It’s about my community and paying my respects to the community and my mom, who lived there all her life, and the really important things that she taught me about kindness, charity, and paying it forward.”
She adds that anyone from the Nipawin area will appreciate the references to some local landmarks in her work.
“I think the most significant one for me is the Cherry Ridge painting. It has multi-generational family, friends, community mixed in through this painting in a collage format.”
She adds that between when the idea was born and now, her mom sadly passed away, however her spirit lives on in the artwork.
“Oh my mom. She is so proud of me…She really was proud and happy that I was able to do this, and she was able to help me.” She adds that there is a theme of dandelions throughout her work, as she admires and identifies with their adaptability and tenacious nature.
Sales proceeds are going towards supporting the Nipawin Art Gallery and Nipawin Royal Purple High School Scholarship program. The display is up in the Nipawin Art Gallery until June 29th.
