STARS says their statistics show their April requests to the 2025 May long weekend, STARS observed a nearly 40 percent higher request in missions, and nearly 132 percent increase in volumes across its network, reinforcing the importance of safety.
Some of the safety tips they are emphasizing include plan ahead before travelling and take breaks to avoid fatigue, use appropriate protective equipment for outdoor and recreational activities like a helmet when on an ATV or a life jacket when out on a boat and let someone know your plans especially if going into a remote area.
STARS notes that the first long weekend in May is associated, by many, with the start of summer.
STARS Provincial Director, Manitoba and Saskatchewan Operations Grant Therrien reminds the public that safe choices now can help prevent emergencies later.
“A few simple choices can make a lifesaving difference. We want to see fewer calls not more. We’re just encouraging folks to plan ahead.”
