After putting on the pads for the first time yesterday at Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp, the team announced their first cuts ahead of practice this morning. Notable names from the group of twelve are American running back Darrell Henderson Junior, American kicker Michael Hughes, and National offensive lineman Dayton Black. Also among the group was American defensive back Jerry Jacobs moved to the retired list while National running back Thomas Betrand-Hudon was activated from the injured list and was back on the field at Griffiths Stadium.
Also on the field this morning was the Roughriders first round pick from the 2026 draft, Malcom Bell after a brief stint at Cleveland Browns rookie camp. Although it was a shorter practice today and the first time seeing Montreal native, head coach Corey Mace was impressed with what he saw saying “he is who we thought he was”. Bell was selected nineth overall by Saskatchewan at the draft back in late-April after an impressive senior season with Michigan State where he earned career highs in tackles and tackles for loss at 49 and 5, respectively. RIDERS SIGN 1st ROUND DRAFT SELECTION MALCOLM BELL
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed National defensive back Malcolm Bell.
Bell (6’2-188) was selected ninth overall in the 2026 CFL Canadian Draft. He played in 12 games, making 11 starts, as a senior with Michigan State earning career-highs in tackles (49) and tackles for loss (5), while also posting a team-high six pass breakups and adding one sack. The Montreal native lined up for a career-best 717 snaps at cornerback, the most on the team and was the Spartans’ highest graded defender, per Pro Football Focus, with a grade of 79.3. He recently attended rookie minicamp with the Cleveland Browns.
Prior to transferring to Michigan State, Bell played four collegiate seasons (2021-24) at the University of Connecticut, suiting up for 33 games and 20 starts. He registered 94 tackles as a Huskie, including five for a loss, alongside 13 pass breakups and one forced fumble.
