Cameco issued a news release indicating production activities at their Key Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan have been halted and activity has been reduced at the McArthur River mine while Cigar Lake mine continues to operate. This is because the Smoothstone River Bridge, which is on the primary route the uranium giant uses to transport supplies to McArthur River and Key Lake, has collapsed due to flooding.
The company says flooding does not directly impact their sites but there are restrictions in place on the use of an alternative roadway. Depending on the how long road restrictions last and whether it impacts Cameco’s ability to ship in “critical operating material”, it is advising that the 2026 production outlook for the McArthur River/Key Lake operation could be impacted.
As of this morning the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is responding to 23 flooding events and there have been 31 so far this spring with seven being the five year average. So while flooding isn’t as common for Saskatchewan at this time of year, wildfires are. However, the picture has been flipped because there are only two active wildfires in the province, and there have been 20 to date as compared to last year at the same time when there had already been 144 wildfires
