Now that the weather has warmed up, the City of Saskatoon is encouraging residents to take part in Spring BYXE week, running May 9th through the 17th.
Nathalie Baudais, Engineering Manager for Transportation, says cycling benefits not only your physical and mental health, but also the environment and the city’s transit system.
“The more people who are riding a bike, the less people who are in their car causing traffic delays and backups. Cycling, with a lot of the construction that’s happening, may actually be faster than driving your car, which might sound counterintuitive based on the distance, but you won’t be trying to zipper merge with people. You can bypass all of that.”
And parking won’t be an issue, either. The week kicks off tomorrow, May 9th, with a slow roll starting at 2:00 p.m. at Gather Local Market. Then, visit the Tune Up Tent on Sunday to get your bike maintenanced for the season.
“Make sure your breaks are working, your tires are all pumped up, and you can learn some skills on how to do it yourself from people who know how to do it.”
With your freshly tuned-up bike, take part in Bike to Work Day on Thursday.
“There will be some snack stations in the morning giving out free snacks and coffee, and I think there are some after work commuter stations, but their times vary.”
There will also be a scavenger hunt and a passport adventure going on throughout the week, and a social media contest that encourages cyclists to post their travels online.
