A recent report from Statistics Canada reveals some shocking details about Saskatchewan’s violent crime numbers.
According to the data, Saskatchewan has the highest rate of firearm-related crime of all Canadian province, and it’s by a long shot. In 2024, there were 670 firearm related incidents in Saskatchewan, or 120 firearm-related crimes per every 100,000 people.
That’s compared to rates of 49 incidents per 100,000 people in Alberta and 81 incidents in Manitoba, respectively.
NDP Caucus Chair Matt Love says this is very concerning, and he blames the current government for putting the province in last place.
“We used to be the place, here in Saskatchewan, where you kept your doors unlocked, and now people don’t feel safe in their communities or downtown.”
He adds that between 2014 and 2024, violent crime involving a firearm increased 44 per cent in Canada, and a handgun was used in half of those crimes.
StatsCan also says Saskatchewan has the worst crime severity index in Canada, at 153.9 in 2024, which was nearly double the national average of 77.9.
“These are distinctions that no province would want to have. The highest rates of crime severity in the country, the highest rates of gun violence, and the highest rates of interpersonal violence. This government has been in charge for 20 years. What have they been doing?”
