This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. The story out of Regina recently regarding a senior being urged to move from her home in social housing owned by the province to a seniors residence in order to make room for families is disheartening on a couple fronts. And I know the government says there is a policy written into the tenant leases that allows the government to move people along but it still comes across as pretty darn callous when as one person put it – this is her community. Plus, its not that easy to get into seniors housing either. On the other hand, is this what we’ve come to? We are so short on housing for families that we are urging people living in social housing to make way. Wow. Back in the day when I was renting apartments my only concern was to know exactly what I needed to do to get my damage deposit back. This is one of those timely but unfortunate reminders – to read the fine print. And to know your rights both as a renter and as a landlord.
