Prime Minister Mark Carney scored a hat trick Monday night, winning three by elections between Ontario and Quebec to secure a majority government.  The majority means Carney will remain in office until 2029.

Prior to the byelections five opposition members crossed the floor to join the Liberals including four Conservatives: Chris d’Entremont, Michael Ma, Matt Jeneroux, and most recently Marilyn Gladu.  In addition, Lori Idlout, an NDP MP, crossed the House to join the Liberals.

Having achieved this majority status, Carney is now exempt from having to work with other parties in the House of Commons. The Liberal government can now rush through bills and spending without collaboration or input. While some Canadians are thrilled with the news, others took to online comment sections to state that, “an unelected majority is called a dictatorship.”
