The Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts is putting on an event on October 30th that will appeal to both Halloween lovers and those interested in military history.
Ghost Stories from the Battlefield will recount true stories experienced by soldiers while in combat or stationed somewhere. Museum Project Manager Kevin Hicks says that some of the stories will be from his own experiences while stationed in Berlin.
“They are genuine stories. When I was stationed in Berlin, our barracks were actually part of the Gestapo headquarters and there was an execution block in there and I’ll be recounting the stories of what it was actually like to live in that block.”
The event comes after Hicks was asked by several visitors to present his experiences while in the military.
“We are often asked on a serious note, ‘what about the battlefields, what about the different places such horror has gone?’ And I just tell my stories about my experiences as a British soldier in Berlin, about my experiences moving around the battlefields of northern France and they say ‘wow, you should really tell these.'”
Along with Hicks’s stories, university students who volunteer at the museum will tell other true stories that took place during various conflicts.
“One of our students is of Russian origin and he’s going to give a story of the First World War on the Russian front which is quite sad, quite horrifying in fact. So they are genuine stories.”
Anyone interested in going to Ghost Stories from the Battlefield can purchase tickets online at www.smoma.ca. There will be two sessions, one running from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the other from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
