Crews are still at the scene of a fire that broke out Monday at the Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill.
The mill’s media contact Chris Stoicheff says favourable overnight weather conditions helped crews tackle the blaze, but several hotspots still remain. He adds that the fire started at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday, meaning it has been burning for over 24 hours.
“Fire crews are still on site working on it, and probably will be for some time,” Stoicheff admits.
No one was injured in the matter, and the mill itself was untouched, but a pile of logs felt the brunt of the destruction.
“It’s a big part of our business, and the damage is substantial and unfortunate, especially at a time when our sector is dealing with other issues like tariffs from the United States. It’s a really unfortunate situation.”
Firetrucks, RCMP, and aerial water support arrived on scene, containing the fire to the property, owned by Domtar.
“We really do appreciate the support from the fire crews and surrounding community. It’s much appreciated and they’re doing a great job.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The mill is back up and running as of Tuesday.
