A new MEI report has revealed that young nurses are leaving the profession at an alarming rate.
The report showed that for every 100 new nurses that started in Canada in 2023, 40 nurses under 35 left the job.
Saskatchewan’s numbers are not far behind, with 38 nurses leaving for every 100 starting.
Nursing job vacancies in Canada also tripled between 2018 and 2023, going from over 13,000 to nearly 42,000.
These numbers come as nurses report working involuntary overtime, experiencing violence and abuse in the workplace and showing clinical signs of anxiety, depression and burnout.
The MEI is an independent public policy think tank with offices in Montreal and Calgary.
