After a close 3-2 victory to open the new Canada West season, the Saskatchewan Huskies were just a step behind of Mount Royal this afternoon as the Cougars exiled their revenge from last spring’s championship defeat with a 6-2 win. The top two ranked teams entering the season spilt the weekend series as Mount Royal will start up a two-game set against Calgary next weekend while the Huskies have a bye, with their next game action on Friday, October 17th with their first road trip of the season to Trinity Western.
Mount Royal jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Vaughn Watterodt and Tanner Komzak, their first goals of the season followed by Carter Stebbings response goal for Saskatchewan. The Cougars would score with 42 seconds left in the opening frame as Connor Poffenroth tucked home a rebound for his first career Canada West goal. No scoring occurred in the middle frame with the next three goals coming from Mount Royal in the third period with Remy Aquilon, Connor Bouchard and Layton Feist all getting their first goals of the season. Carter Stebbings scored his second of the game with just under nine minutes left, but no comeback would be in the cards for Saskatchewan. Below are game stats courtesy of Canada West and postgame comments from Head Coach Brandin Cote…..
