After over two years of construction, the doors are officially open at the new awâsisak kâ-nîmîhtocik St. Francis School.
The Cree name means “children who dance”, which is fitting for a school that aims to focus on enhancing the cultural aspects of student’s studies.
The pre-Kindergarten to Grade 9 school will accommodate up to 700 students who previously learned in two different locations, as demand grows for Cree-language education and cultural programming.
The school will also feature a Saskatoon Tribal Council 70-space early learning centre.
The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $45.6 million toward the construction, with additional funding from Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and community partners to support the Indigenous design elements of the school.
