The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has launched its investigation into a police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man in Regina on Sept. 25.
The man was fatally shot during a high-risk arrest operation carried out by the Regina Police Service (RPS).
In a news release from SIRT, the man was wanted in connection with an ongoing domestic violence case. Due to prior remarks attributed to the suspect, that were concerning, Regina Police Service requested the Tactical Support Team to assist in the arrest.
He was tracked to a home in the Queen City and around 11:07 p.m., after confirming the man was inside, police made entry. There was a confrontation inside the home between the man and members of the police service. SIRT says three Tactical Support Team Officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. Officers at the scene administered first-aid until paramedics arrived at 11:14 p.m. The man was pronounced deceased shortly after.
SIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Regina Police Service will maintain responsibility for the investigation that brought police into contact with the man.
A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
