Washing your hands. It may sound like common sense for many, but the Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding the public to keep up the habit following an increase in cryptosporidiosis cases.
Dr. Simon Kapaj says crypto is an illness that comes from accidentally ingesting a certain parasite, often found in feces. Dr. Kapaj says the cases started spiking in June and continued to throughout the summer.
“People can get it by drinking water or eating contaminated food with the bug. Contact with animal or human feces, as well.”
Symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. If these symptoms persist, Dr. Kapaj says a health care should be sought out.
Dr. Kapaj says washing your hands thoroughly after using the washroom, diapering a child, handling animals, and before preparing food is all it takes to prevent the disease in most cases.
Other tips include not accidentally ingesting water from the hot tub or swimming pool, and don’t consume unpasteurized dairy.
