Persephone Theatre is able to tackle the next phase of its roof-repair project thanks to a generous donation through the company’s Raise the Roof Campaign.
For the last 18 years, since Persephone made a permanent home in the Remai Arts Centre, the pooling water and leakage in the roof has caused water damage and safety concerns throughout the building. These impacts are being felt most notably above the stage, in administration, and within the wardrobe shop.
Until now, temporary repairs have gotten Persephone through, but now it’s time for a complete replacement, which will cost the theatre more than $2 million.
The latest to donate to the Raise the Roof Campaign was Ellen Remai with a $1 million gift, announced Friday. The donation will enable the theatre company to tackle the second phase of the repair in 2026, focusing on the lower portion of the roof, the largest part of the project.
The first phase of te project was made possible last year by Malcolm and Marilyn Leggett, who committed to donate $300,000 over three years to launch the campaign.
To ensure a full roof-repair is able to take place, Persephone Theatre will be continuing to seek support from the community.
