Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison has proclaimed September 20 to 27 as Global Biotech Week in Saskatchewan. Biotechnology is the use of biology and the modification of living organisms to solve problems and often improve agricultural practices.
There is an array of events and activities taking place next week to celebrate the role biotech plays in Saskatchewan, as well as educate the public on the topic.
For example, Global Biotech Week has an exhibit at Nuit Blanche in Saskatoon titled Beautifull Science: The Story of a Forest. That’s up tomorrow between 7:00pm and midnight. On Monday, Innovation place is hosting Taste of Innovation, a workshop, meal, and question and Answer period regarding Indigenous culture, agriculture, and science. Also on Monday, Agriculture in the Classroom is hosting a science teacher workshop. Tuesday and Wednesday feature a two-day Healthy People Healthy Animals Scientific Summit presented by the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization. On Thursday, students from Saskatchewan Polytechnic will compete in the Amazing Biotech Race, completing quick lab challenges and learning about Saskatoon bioscience companies along the way. There is a full list of events available here.
