Jonathan Dreidger with LeftField Commodity Research was the guest on the September 2nd Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Podcast.
He spoke about better than expected yields for peas and lentils in areas of the province that received better-than-expected summer rain. While producers are satisfied with yields-to-date, the big concern is outside of Canadian borders. China’s 100 per cent tariff on yellow peas is the most prominent worry. About 85 to 90 per cent of yellow pea exports go to only three countries: China, India and Bangladesh. Dreidger says China is the biggest buyer and it will be very difficult to replace those sales. He was asked if he thought China could lift the punishing duties in the coming months.
Canadian green lentil production will increase due to higher seeded area as farmers responded to spring market signals. Unfortunately, those prices are not available now. Dreidger talks about how this will impact 2025-26 exports.
The news is a bit better for red lentils.
Chickpeas have the greatest potential due to the diversified customer base.
