Livestock producers in 120 of Saskatchewan’s 296 rural municipalities will quality for the 2025 Livestock Tax Deferral.
Most of those rural municipalities are in southwest and south-central regions, as well as the northern grainbelt. Even though these areas have received recent rain, very dry conditions earlier in the year sharply reduced hay and forage production.
The Livestock Tax Deferral allows producers in prescribed areas to defer a portion of their income from sales until the next tax year if they are forced to sell at least 15 per cent of their breeding herd due to drought.
“Buffer zones” have been added to capture producers who are not in the prescribed zones but who may be experiencing similar adverse conditions.
