Canada has removed the option for those renewing their Nexus travel cards to identify as anything but male or female.

The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order that states that the U.S. government will only recognize the male and female sex, and any U.S. passports and identity documents issued with an X gender marker will be terminated.

The decision is raising the eyebrows of immigration lawyers, as this could propel potential constitutional challenges.

The Canada Border Services Agency has since clarified that card holders who had theirs issued before the order took effect will not be impacted
