A former volunteer firefighter from Macklin has been sentenced after pleading guilty to arson causing damage following a series of fires that plagued the community in the summer of 2024.
Logan Sieben, 25, appeared in Unity Provincial court on July 21, where he was handed an 18-month probation sentence. As part of his conditions, he must complete 200 hours of community service within 15 months and is prohibited from possessing any fire-starting materials. No restitution will be required to the Macklin & District Fire and Rescue.
The court heard that Sieben had been a member of the Macklin fire department when he was charged in August 2024. His arrest followed a joint investigation by RCMP and local fire officials after more than 20 suspicious fires were reported in the area between July 28 and Aug. 25, 2024. He later admitted responsibility for some of the incidents.
During the sentencing, the Judge considered Sieben’s age, his apology to the court, and documentation from his counsellor. The court also heard that Sieben had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder following the charges and had since sought professional support.
The sentence follows a previous court appearance on June 16, when defence counsel outlined Sieben’s mental health struggles and emphasized his ongoing efforts toward rehabilitation.
