The CTF has launched their Saskatchewan Provincial Debt Clock Tour this week. They want to bring home the point to the government that it needs to stop wasting so much money and stop driving up the provincial debt. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is a grassroots advocacy organization that fights for lower taxes, less government waste and more government accountability.
Gage Haubrick is the Prairie Director for the CTF and says the Debt Clock is a digital clock on the side of a cube truck that has a digital sign showing the provincial debt going up in real time. He says for every minute they see the debt going up more than three thousand dollars, it gives perspective to how fast the provincial debt is going up and how it is costing taxpayers so much money in debt interest payments. When taxpayers see the debt clock, they can see how bad the situation is and demand action from their politicians.
Haubrick says since Scott Moe became premier, he will have doubled the provincial debt by the end of the year.
“It’s a perfect time to take out the Debt Clock and show taxpayers how big that number is and how much it’s costing every single person in Saskatchewan, to demand action on the government to start controlling their spending and pay back that debt so taxpayers in Saskatchewan aren’t wasting millions of dollars every year on interest charges,” Haubrick explained.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation say interest charges on the debt will cost about $878.4 million this year, or about $700 per Saskatchewan resident. Saskatchewan’s debt will be about $23.5 billion by the end of the year, or $18,713 per Saskatchewanian.
