The Saskatoon Police Service says an officer responded to a bear spray incident around 3 a.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of 22nd Street West where he spotted three males on bicycles nearby.
In a news release police say one of the three appeared to be concealing a weapon in his waistband and refused to stop. The officer left his vehicle and pursued the suspect on foot for over a half a kilometre to the 1300 block of 23rd street West and as he attempted to make an arrest the suspect allegedly reached for a machete he was carrying.
The officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon, but the suspect brandished the weapon threatening the officer and himself. Another officer arrived on scene and the suspect was taken into custody.
The man is now facing charges of Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public Peace, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Assaulting a Peace Officer. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
