The Saskatoon Berries are heading out on their longest road trip of the season on a high after out-scoring the Swift Current 57s 11-6 Sunday afternoon at Cairns Field.
The Berries have won four straight, giving them a 32-5 record and an eight-and-a-half game lead over Medicine Hat atop the W-C-B-L’s East Division. On Sunday, before 1,926 fans, Saskatoon fell behind 5-2 in the third inning to the now 7-29 57s – whom they had wallopped 18-2 on Saturday night – but used a couple of clutch home runs to rally for their 19th win in 21 home games and fourth win in five-head-to-head meetings with Swift Current. Designated hitter Jalen Freeman clubbed a three-run homer to tie the score at 5-5 in the fourth inning. Freeman’s first round-tripper of the season was off the right field foul pole. Then, centre-fielder Carter Beck smoked a seventh-inning two-run shot over 400 feet to straight away centre field to give the Berries a more comfortable lead at 10-6. Beck and his Indiana State University team-mate – third baseman Mason Roell – each had three hits and two runs batted, while Matthias Trondson, the second Saskatoon pitcher of the day, pitched three-and-two-thirds innings for the mound victory. The Berries’ next action at Cairns Field is Thursday, July 24, when they host the 57s again. Saskatoon’s eight-game road swing begins Monday night with a re-scheduled contest in Medicine Hat – then two games in Okotoks, two games in Lethbridge, two games in Weyburn and a single in Swift Current.
