It’s my Parting Shot for some Weekend Short Shots…..
The Toronto Blue Jays are in first place in the American League East Division! Let that sink in for a minute, then look at the calendar and see that it is July 4, not April 4 – or even May 4! Of course, after sweeping the Yankees in four straight games, the Jays will likely have an all-over let-down and get swept by the L-A Angels this weekend!!
Those were diametrically opposite ball games the last two nights at Cairns Field involving the Saskatoon Berries. Let me add, the 25-3 Saskatoon Berries! On Wednesday, it was great drama and sports theatre as the Berries rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to force a 10th frame and won 8-7 over Moose Jaw. That was three hours and 15 minutes of thrills, chills and a crowd that was into it, big time! Last night was three hours and 22 minutes of a very good Saskatoon team beating up on a very bad Weyburn team – a squad that was playing the last game of a long, winless road trip and whose pitching needs help, big time! If you like 22-4 shellackings, with almost 400 pitches thrown, over a dozen walks and four hit batsmen, last night was for you!
I realize this is from last weekend, but between Canada Day and doing C-F-L predictions and reactions to the headlines from the Star-Phoenix Sports Section, this item slipped through until now. But, I knew that Canada would lose their Gold Cup quarter-final game to Guatemala when the match went to penalty kicks! Canadians are still learning how to play at the elite level and that loss shows that our national men’s team is a long ways away from being an international heavyweight!!
Another Canadian disappointment was the performance of Our Home and Native Land pro tennis players at Wimbledon. None of them got by the second round in either the women’s or men’s singles! In Bianca Andresscu’s case, she didn’t even qualify for the fortnight! Andresscu’s sudden rise and just as sudden fall reminds me of another flash-in-the-pan Canadian tennis star in Genie Bouchard! And, don’t get me started on Denis Shapovalov! His toddler-like tantrums have become embarrassing!!
That’s my Parting Shot. I’m Les Lazaruk…and it turned out nice again!
