A long winning streak continued Thursday night, as did a long losing streak as the Saskatoon Berries blasted the Weyburn Beavers 22-4 before 1,341 fans at Cairns Field.
The Berries put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in each of the first five innings as Saskatoon recorded their 10th consecutive victory while Weyburn dropped their eighth consecutive game…each representing the longest such current streak in the W-C-B-L. The Berries showed off the home run power for their home faithful fans that they have on the road, hitting four round-trippers – two of them by Bailyn Sorenson and one each by Cory Wouters and Ethan Menard. The latter’s two-run moon shot travelled over 400 feet to straight-away centre field, the first of three homers hit by Saskatoon during a seven-run second inning that snapped a 3-3 tie. Menard’s Louisiana buddy Sorenson had seven runs batted in and third baseman Cooper Wesslund had three hits, including a triple, and scored three runs, including the go-ahead run in the second frame. Besides a 10th straight win, Thursday’s lop-sided decision allowed the Berries to reach the mid-point of their 56-game schedule with a 25-3 record, including a perfect 16-0 at Cairns Field. On the other side, the Beavers fell to 7-21. They are heading back to Weyburn after losing all seven games on a road trip into Alberta and a final stop in Saskatoon, during which they were out-scored 90-39 and gave up at least 10 runs in each of their last six outings. Beavers’ pitching gave up 19 hits, plunked four Berries’ batters – with three of those driving in a run as the bases were loaded – issued 11 walks and threw 225 pitches in a nine-inning game that took three hours and 22 minutes to play. Saskatoon plays a seventh straight game in as many days Friday night when they visit Moose Jaw, then head back to Cairns Field for a Saturday evening contest against Regina at 6 o’clock. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with head coach Joe Carnahan, Sorenson and Wesslund plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L website…..
