Despite heavy rainfall in certain areas, provincial topsoil moisture conditions declined from last week, according to the SaskAgriculture provincial crop report.
Crops extension specialist Kim Stonehouse says rainfall amounts varied greatly across Saskatchewan during the week of June 24th to 30th.
However, overall, it wasn’t enough to boost moisture levels.
Due to this lack of moisture, crops developed swiftly over the last week, with all crop types further ahead of normal stages than they were last week.
Crop conditions also varied due to the amount of rain that fell.
Several factors contributed to crop damage last week, mainly inadequate moisture and some sporadic hail.
Stonehouse says some more timely rain will be needed throughout July and August to sustain yield potential to harvest.
