Prior to Saskatoon hopping on board, the City of Regina has started its partnership with provincial entity, SK Recycles.
Starting July 1, items accepted in the blue cart are changing, as recycling processing responsibilities are shifting from the hands of the City to the provincial government.
Last May, the Ministry of Environment approved a plan that allows provincial entity SK Recycles to take responsibility for both collection and recycling in municipalities across the province. Municipalities were asked to get on board with this shift by December 1st, 2027. Saskatoon will be making the shift January 1st, 2028.
Carolyn Kalim, Director of Water, Waste and Environment with the City of Regina, says “By combining the City’s reliable curbside collection with SK Recycles’ expert sorting and processing, we enhance our recycling system while reducing costs for residents. Expanding the range of materials accepted in the blue cart will ultimately help reduce contamination rates.”
