If you heard that a business had over 200 unfilled appointments, you may think that there isn’t a need for its services. However, that couldn’t be more wrong in the case of Canadian Blood Services.
Saskatoon Business Development Manager for Canadian Blood Services Lisa Beechinor says there are more than 100 open appointments in both Saskatoon and Regina between July 1st and 3rd. She explains that CBS is always in need of donations, but long weekends and holidays are when it becomes most evident, as donating blood is not top of mind for most people.
She says every sixty seconds, someone in Canada needs blood, and as the Canadian population ages and grows, the need for blood is even greater. Because of this, Canadian Blood Services is looking to recruit one million new blood donors over the next five years.
“We ask that you book an appointment. It helps with staffing and makes for a really good experience. If you can’t and you happen to be driving by, please stop in, and if we have open appointments, we will definitely put you into one of those.”
She adds that appointments are one hour long, with only 5-10 minutes with the needle in your arm. Donors get snacks before and after they roll up their sleeve, and they get to leave knowing they saved someone’s life.
“If you’re a little nervous about it, consider coming with a friend of someone who’s donated before. Sometimes you find that it just helps ease any apprehensions you have.”
To book an appointment, download the Give Blood App, go to Blood.ca or call 1-888-TO DONATE.
