Whether you describe it as a roller-coaster ride or a see-saw of momentum, the Saskatoon Berries ended up with the final surge of positivity Wednesday night to nip the Regina Red Sox 6-5 at Cairns Field.
Carter Beck scampered home with what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning from third base when Regina botched a run-down between first and second. Tanner Hosick came on to retire the Red Sox in order in the top of the ninth frame for the save and the Berries improved to 19-3 for the season and 13-0 at home. The victory also completed a home-and-home sweep for Saskatoon over Regina in the W-C-B-L’s version of the Big City Saskatchewan rivals, something that thrilled the 1,820 fans at Cairns Field. The Berries led 2-0 through four-and-a-half innings when the teams traded scoring runs over the next seven half-innings before the Red Sox failed to score in the top of the ninth to fall to 11-10 overall and 0-3 against Saskatoon this season. The Berries are off until a Saturday-Sunday trip to Medicine Hat, then come home for a Monday reprise against Regina at 7 o’clock at Cairns Field. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with Saskatoon head coach Joe Carnahan, Hosick and first baseman Mason Roell plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L’s website…..
