We are used to having our mail delivered, either right to our mailbox by the door or else a community mailbox near to where we live. Here at the radio stations the Canada Post letter carrier arrives weekdays between 11am and noon. We don’t get mail delivery to our house. There’s a community mailbox five houses down our street, just a nice brisk walk there and back, especially brisk when it’s minus 20 with a wind. It’s a shame there has to be a lot of labour strife between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. On top of the ongoing conflict there was a nation-wide strike last fall, and there were rotating strikes dating back to 2018. Canada Post has been hemorrhaging money and from all appearances the very future of the crown corporation is in question. Last week I saw some new data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute. For openers it showed that Canadians are opposed to the government selling off Canada Post by a more than 2-1 margin. Two thirds of Canadians say it’s important that Canada Post remain publicly owned. However, Canadians are open to changes in the way Canada Post operates. Just over half, 52%, say Canada Post should be allowed to utilize non-union gig workers to deliver mail and parcels if it improves cost and service quality, and 72% would reduce mail delivery to three days a week. I’m in this 72% because we don’t pick up our mail every weekday. Unless we’re expecting something important, I pick up a week’s worth Friday afternoons and why not? If it doesn’t have a cheque in it, isn’t it junk mail?
