Is it just me or are the mosquitoes bad this spring? I’ve always been one of those people who brag about not being a mosquito magnet. I’ll be out in the back yard with my wife and she’s being swarmed while in the meantime I may be noticing the odd one but that’s about it. I go outside to water the pots and flower beds in the evening because as we know plants are better off watered when it’s not too hot and that may be my first mistake because the little flying pests don’t like hot afternoon sun, but they come out looking for dinner when it’s cooler at twilight. Lately I find I am being bothered a lot by those annoying skeeters. You’d almost think they were lying in wait and say, “look, here he comes! Attack formation”! It destroys my usual enjoyment of an hour’s worth of fresh air and mild exercise (we have a lot of plants). Why mosquitoes find me tastier this year I don’t know. Maybe my skin odour is different. I looked at a study that suggests skin odour is the “primary driver of differential mosquito attraction to humans” which I guess means if you smell a certain way you seem more delicious. The best thing for me to do is use my head and before I go out put on long-sleeved light-coloured clothing and some repellent. With any luck the number of mosquitoes will get smaller as we get into summer and I certainly hope so because if we can’t enjoy being outside in July and August then what the heck, might as well sell the house and move to Florida (just kidding) …..although I hear there are a lot of condos for sale down there at slashed prices. Gee, I wonder why?
