The beat goes on at Cairns Field for the Saskatoon Berries.
The Berries spotted Weyburn a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning on Father’s Day Sunday before rallying for a 13-4 triumph, improving their home diamond record to 8-0 and 13-2 overall, best in the Western Canadian Baseball League. The Beavers dropped to 4-10 as they lost both games by lop-sided scores in Saskatoon over the weekend. On Saturday, Saskatoon cruised to a 12-5 triumph. On Sunday, Weyburn got off to a promising start with starting pitcher Gram Middleton striking out five Berries’ batters in the first two innings. But, the Beavers’ pitching was erratic after that – issuing nine walks, hitting seven Saskatoon batters and throwing 211 pitches overall. Add in 14 Berries’ hits and the result was a sixth straight win for 13-2 Saskatoon. Despite surrendering the four runs in the third inning, Berries’ starter Robert Bonilla pitched five innings for the victory in front of 2,075 fans at Cairns Field. Offensively, third baseman Mason Roell drove in four runs and right fielder Ethan Murdoch plated three more while designated hitter Ethan Menard had four singles in his first four plate appearances, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Saskatoon gets Monday off before welcoming the Sylvan Lake Gulls to Cairns Field for the first time ever on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with head coach Joe Carnahan, pitching coach Ryan Olchoway and Bonilla…..
