The first battle of the 2025 season between the early season heavyweights of the East Division and the overall W-C-B-L went the way of the home team Tuesday night as the Saskatoon Berries trimmed the Medicine Hat Mavericks 7-1 before 1,548 fans at NexGen Patch at Cairns Field.
After spotting Medicine Hat the game’s opening run in the top of the third inning, the Berries scored in each of the third through sixth innings to record their fifth win in as many outings at home. As well, the result means Saskatoon’s 8-2 record is tied with the Mavericks’ 9-3 mark for first place in the East, although the Berries have the edge by winning percentage. Saskatoon got two hits and three R-B-I from centre-fielder Carter Beck while first baseman Ethan Menard returned to the Berries with two runs scored and an R-B-I to pace the offence. Six Berries pitchers scattered eight hits and benefitted from no errors from the defence, plus a key play to end the top of the fourth inning. With Saskatoon leading 2-1, Medicine Hat had runners on first and second when their catcher Nate King singled up the middle. Beck’s throw home was cut-off by Menard, and his relay throw to second baseman Nomar Prieto put a tag on base runner Evan Morrison for the third out before Johnny Vulcano reached home plate. The same teams meet again tonight at Cairns Field at 7 o’clock. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game conversations with Berries’ head coach Joe Carnahan, Beck and Menard plus the official box score courtesy the W-C-B-L website…..
