The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding that the Sask. Party provide adequate assistance to those displaced by northern wildfires.
The Opposition says it is echoing calls from the provincial Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner Sharon Pratchler after she identified “unprecedented” failures to provide people with shelter, food and critical information.
Jordan McPhail, NDP Cumberland MLA, says “What the Ombudsman has revealed this morning reinforces so much of what I have been hearing from my constituents since this wildfire crisis began nearly two weeks ago. People being bounced around from agency to agency, with no clear information. Phone numbers that dont work, emails that never receive a response.”
He adds that people were waiting over a week for basic information and support. They have also been sleeping in their cars and tents because they weren’t provided proper shelter.
The NDP is also criticizing the financial aid that the province has provided, which they cite as being simply “vouchers for grocery stores that are 300 kilometres away.”
