Friday night around 7 p.m., Carrot River RCMP responded to a report of a seriously injured child under 10 at a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation. RCMP say life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The death was deemed suspicious and a suspect known to the child was identified and taken into custody. Karrena Young, 23-years-old from Shoal Lake Cree Nation, has been charged with one count of manslaughter and will appear in Melfort Provincial Court today (Monday).

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate.
